Musical Fidelity celebrates the return of an icon with the reintroduction of the A1 stereo integrated amplifier, originally released in 1985. This updated edition, still overseen by renowned designer Tim de Paravicini, has achieved a dramatic revitalisation of the classic model, retaining its original specifications, circuitry and distinctive aesthetics.

The most notable upgrade lies in its symmetrical circuit topology, executed with discrete components that now allow the A1 to deliver 25 watts in pure Class A over 8 ohms, compared to 20 watts in its original version. This capability is enhanced by a smooth transition to Class B operation when higher current delivery is required, ensuring efficient and flexible operation.

As for the preamp section, significant improvements have been made. A volume potentiometer from the ALPS RK series, renowned for its quality and accuracy, has been incorporated, and regulated power supply lines have been implemented to minimise noise. However, the preamp circuitry remains true to the original design, using the same low-noise TL071 JFET preamplifier that characterised the 1985 A1.

A major advance in the revamped A1 is its phono stage, which now uses very low-noise discrete components and is compatible with both MM (moving magnet) and MC (moving coil) capsules. In addition, it automatically adjusts the load impedance for MC capsules, optimising the performance and adaptability of the device to different audio configurations.

This revival of the A1 is not only a tribute to its legacy, but also underscores Musical Fidelity's commitment to audio engineering excellence, maintaining the essence of the original design while introducing contemporary enhancements that meet the expectations of modern audiophiles. This updated classic is destined to reassert itself as an essential piece of equipment for hi-fi audio enthusiasts.
