EAT E-GLO is a tube design completely free of semiconductors in its signal path. Its tube complement consists of the classic glassware loved by audiophiles: four ECC83s and two ECC88s. Using these valves will ensure that replacement tube supplies are always available, while experimentation is encouraged for those who love to fine tune the sound of their systems by changing tubes.
On the fully balanced input stage, we installed a Lundahl step-up transformer with an amorphous core, type LL1932. The unity gain is 45db, plus the step-up transformer voltage gain. E-Glo's amp section uses a fully passive, split EQ, with no EQ in the overall negative feedback loop, which can damage the sound.
At this level of performance, only the best components will suffice. The choice of the output capacitor is the highly praised Mundorf. All other capacitors are WIMA. Mundorf connectors with Teflon insulation have been chosen for their unmatched integrity.
To ensure maximum flexibility, to ensure perfect adaptation to a wide range of cartridges, the E-Glo provides capacitance charging for the moving magnet types in six user-switchable steps from 47pf to 900pF. "The load resistance of the moving coil cartridges is continuously adjustable," says Lichtenegger, "as we already have in our Phono Box RS."
To ensure quiet operation an external power supply is used, connected to the E-Glo via a special 9-pin connector, familiar to those who remember the legendary Cello Palette preamp. Its heart is a custom made toroidal transformer. The transformer is double shielded between the primary and secondary windings. This prevents RFI intrusion, while also acting as a superior network filter.
Separate power supplies feed the tube preamplifier because the best way to protect a grid transformer from electromagnetic radiation is to distance it from the electronics. The metal shield alone cannot do the job, and neither can a separate power supply.
For rectification circuitry, E.A.T. installed special diodes with noise suppressing resistors. High quality electrolytic capacitors are also used, followed by a voltage regulator with capacitor multiplier. The power component is a FET transistor.
A feast for the eyes, the sleek E-Glo is housed in a 435x60x250mm chassis, with valves poking through cleverly designed heatsinks reminiscent of the two spools of a reel-to-reel tape deck. Along the front section are rows of switches for instant access to all settings, no need to "go in" to configure the E-Glo for the capsule of your choice. The E-Glo by E.A.T. it is a state-of-the-art phono stage capable of extracting the maximum performance from any capsule that is requested.
