Aesthetics and performance
After more than four years of research and development, Focal presents in 2019 a new technology with exceptional characteristics: the Slatefiber membrane .
Made in France , this membrane is characterized by a dynamic, rich and very balanced sound , especially in the midrange. Its acoustic qualities and its exclusive " blackboard effect " make it a Hi-Fi reference in its price category.
A true composite membrane
The Slatefiber membrane is a composite material cone made from non-woven recycled carbon fibers. Focal is the first brand in the audio sector to use recycled carbon fibers in its speakers and a thermoplastic polymer . The acoustic qualities provided by the combination of these two materials are excellent, both in sound speed and in rigidity and damping.
Rigidity
Carbon fibers themselves have unusual rigidity. In addition, since they are all oriented in the same direction , they make it possible to further increase the rigidity of the speaker and therefore obtain deeper bass.
Cushioning
The carbon fibers are oriented, but they are also not woven , to guarantee better cushioning. Thermoplastic polymer is found between the fibers to bind them together and thereby increase cushioning.
Lightness
During development, special attention has been paid to the weight of the membranes to optimize their sensitivity: carbon fibers are very light . Thus, in addition to the criteria of rigidity and damping, the Slatefiber membrane satisfies the criteria of lightness of the loudspeaker.
Exclusive Made in France technology
Like the Flax, Kevlar and W membranes, the Slatefiber membrane is manufactured entirely in the Focal workshops in Saint-Étienne.
In order to combine productivity, performance and manufacturing in France, Focal engineers have developed semi-automated industrial means for manufacturing the Slatefiber membrane.
